I obviously have penchant for the finer things in life, I'm always on the hunt for destinations that blend luxury, relaxation, and a hint of adventure. For a birthday gift to myself, my wife Alex and I set our sights on the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve in Puerto Rico—a choice that proved to be one of our value to luxury escapes, I will explain later how I paid for the resort using World of Hyatt Points. From the breathtaking grounds to the impeccable service, this resort surpassed all our expectations. Here's why it now holds a special place in our hearts.

First Impressions: A Tropical Oasis

After a 30-minute drive from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, we arrived at the resort, feeling the stress of daily life melt away. The lush, manicured grounds resembled a private tropical paradise. The open-air lobby, with its sweeping ocean views and gentle sea breeze, immediately set the tone for our stay.

The Room: A Perfect Retreat and Birthday Surprise

Our ocean-view room was a sanctuary of comfort and elegance. Spacious and thoughtfully designed, it featured a private balcony where we sipped our morning coffee, gazing at the Atlantic's expanse. The staff surprised us with delightful birthday decorations—a handwritten note, balloons, and a delectable cake—adding a personal touch to our celebration.

The Pools and Beach: Pure Relaxation

The resort boasts three stunning pools, each offering a unique ambiance. We gravitated towards the adults-only pool, a serene haven perfect for unwinding with a book or a cocktail. The main pool buzzed with energy, featuring a swim-up bar ideal for socializing.

The Grand Reserve Beach presented a pristine stretch of soft sand and tranquil turquoise waters, making every moment feel like a private paradise. Alex particularly loved taking morning walks along the beach, enjoying the sound of the waves and the peaceful surroundings.
Dining: A Culinary Journey

Our taste buds embarked on an adventure at the resort's diverse dining venues. Breakfast at Water’s Edge became a daily indulgence, offering everything from fresh fruits and pastries to made-to-order omelets and local Puerto Rican delights like mofongo. Thanks to my Globalist status, breakfast was completely free, which would have otherwise cost us around $30 per person per day—a total savings of $300 for our stay.

Dinners were equally enchanting. At Nori Asian Grill, the sushi rivaled some of the best we've had, and the ceviche was a burst of flavor. A romantic evening at Pasion by Chef Myrta treated us to exquisite Caribbean and Latin cuisine, all while watching the sunset over the ocean. The resort's cocktail offerings, from classic mojitos to innovative concoctions, were consistently impressive.

The Spa: Ultimate Relaxation

No topical paradise getaway is complete without a spa visit, and the Rainforest Spa at the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve exceeded our expectations. Our couple’s massage was very relaxing experiences and having together was very romantic. The spa's tranquil atmosphere, combined with the therapists' skilled hands, left us rejuvenated and at peace. The treatment rooms seamlessly blended with the surrounding buildings and well maintained gardens, and the gentle sounds of the Caribbean enhanced the overall serenity. Alex especially loved the post-massage relaxation lounge and private pool area, where she could sip herbal tea and unwind completely.

Exploring the Grounds: Golf Carts and Sunsets

The resort's expansive 72-acre property is a visual delight, with winding paths, tropical gardens, and panoramic ocean views. We enjoyed the convenience of complimentary golf carts, feeling like we had our personal chauffeur service. One evening, we rode to the beach just in time to witness a mesmerizing sunset, with the sky painted in hues of pink, orange, and purple—a highlight of our trip.
World of Hyatt Perks: The Ultimate Value

This trip was even sweeter because I used a Category 1-4 free night certificate to book our entire 5-night stay. When I booked, the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve was still a Category 4 hotel, meaning I could maximize my World of Hyatt benefits. Now that it has moved to a Category 5, it requires more points, which is disappointing as it means future travelers will face higher costs. Back then, I got an unbeatable deal, but now it feels frustrating to see the value diminish with the increased price.
To put this in perspective, a standard room at this resort typically costs around $400 per night, meaning our stay would have cost $2,000 if paid in cash. Instead, it was completely free—one of the best hotel redemptions I’ve made. What's better is when you book with points or with a free night certificate with Hyatt you don't pay for taxes of resort fees. Those resort fees really add up and help make using your Hyatt points a real value.
On top of that, using the free night certificate came with free parking, which normally costs $25 per night. That’s another $125 saved over the course of our stay. Between the free room, complimentary breakfast, and waived parking fees, we easily saved over $2,400—all thanks to the World of Hyatt program. The real value from the World of Hyatt comes with hitting 60 elite nights; this can be done with staying at Hyatt properties all over the world or by spending on Hyatt branded credit cards.
Nearby Attractions: Culinary Delights and Luxury Resorts

Things are a bit far away, but it's worth getting out of the resort to explore the places where the locals are.
While the resort offers ample entertainment, its proximity to local attractions adds to its appeal. A 10-minute drive brought us to the town of Luquillo, home to the famed Luquillo Food Trucks. This collection of food kiosks serves a variety of local dishes, from fresh seafood to traditional Puerto Rican fare, offering an authentic taste of the island's culture and cuisine.
For those interested in embarking on an exhilarating adventure, the St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort and El Conquistador Resort await just a 20-30 minute drive away. These luxurious retreats not only offer a change of scenery but also invite you to discover a world of exceptional dining and thrilling activities. Whether you're seeking to indulge in gourmet cuisine or engage in exciting outdoor pursuits, these nearby resorts promise to elevate your experience and ignite your sense of adventure.
Golf and Beyond
Even though we didn't play golf on this trip, the Grand Reserve Golf Course appeared enticing. Crafted by Tom Kite, this 18-hole championship course features breathtaking ocean views and a demanding layout, making it a must-see for golf lovers. I drove by this extensive golf course on my way to the resort and honestly the views of the greens were stunning.
Final Thoughts: A Perfect Birthday Celebration

From the beautiful grounds to the luxurious accommodations, the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve offered everything we hoped for and more. Our days were filled with sunshine, relaxation, and culinary delights, while the nights were peaceful and romantic. Alex particularly loved the resort's spa treatments, beach walks, and the fantastic breakfast spread, while I reveled in the fact that we enjoyed a 5-night luxury getaway without spending a dime on lodging, breakfast, or parking.
The resort perfectly blends luxury with relaxed Caribbean vibes, making it perfect for couples wanting to relax in style. If you're looking for a place that provides top-notch amenities, stunning views, and outstanding service—all while making the most of your World of Hyatt benefits—the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve is your ideal choice.
It’s more than just a resort—it’s an experience. For us, it was the perfect way to celebrate my birthday in paradise.
